Practical Art Presents
“Foremothers” an exhibition of new collaborative work with Jane Kelsey-Mapel and Becky Frehse
May 1 – 31, 2019 Artists’ Reception Friday, May 3rd, 7 – 9 p.m.

Foremothers is an homage to the artists’ mothers and grandmothers who left
behind drawers full of wonderful “stuff” for them to sort through and repurpose
as figurative idols. Jane and Becky
collaborate by collecting and making “parts” in their separate studios followed
by working together to create original pieces.
The assemblages they created for Foremothers incorporate ceramic faces
and aprons, family photos, vintage linens with lace and needle work, old boxes
and doll parts, costume jewelry, and more. Although Becky lives in
Tacoma, Washington and Jane lives in Phoenix, they have been collaborating
since 2012 when they created an exhibit together in Seattle called ReConfigured. They are excited to collaborate on Foremothers, their third exhibition at
Practical Art!

“MAKING FACES”
Hands-On Ceramic Sculpture Workshop with Jane Kelsey-Mapel
at the Shemer Art Center
Saturday, May 11, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
and Saturday, May 18, 9 – 11 a.m.
$140 plus $25 materials fee (includes clay, glazes, firing)

This class will be a fun hands-on exploration of faces, human or animal and as representational or as whimsical as you like! The first day of class will be spent working in wet clay. Jane will discuss basic anatomy and proportions and will demonstrate slab building and modeling techniques. The pieces will be bisque fired and students will return for a half day class to apply the final surface color. Underglazes will be used as stains and washes similar to watercolor. The pieces will be glaze fired and ready for pick up after the workshop.
